Trainees for Employment Readiness Program

The African Canadian Resource Network Inc. (ACRN) is a non-profit organization founded in 2014, based in Regina, Saskatchewan. Our mission is to serve as an umbrella organization and collaboration that addresses the unique challenges and needs of Canadians of African descent, specifically those related to immigration, integration and full participation in Saskatchewan. We provide services, information and referrals, host cultural events and undertake research to promote programs and policies that support capacity building, full participation and integration.


ACRN, in collaboration with the Daughters of Africa Resource Centre, Regina are seeking enthusiastic Trainees (Newcomers to Canada) to apply for a unique and exciting educational opportunity.

As one of 10 selected Participants, you will receive specialized employment readiness training from October 21 – December 9, 2019, requiring a commitment of 30 hours per week.

This training program is part of a research and innovative pilot project to be implemented in collaboration with existing settlement service agencies and employers. It will provide “Visible Minority” Newcomer Women with training,
improved access and mentorship services to support advancement within the Canadian labour market.

As the selected Participant for 1 of 10 available training seats, you will be required to commit to 8 weeks of training……30 hours per week, consisting of 15 hours classroom training and 15 hours of guided collection of information and enhancement of skills. This training is provided free of charge to selected participants, as part of the ACRN Bridging The Gap Project (BGP).

Upon successful completion of the course, 5 Participants will be selected to explore potential Employment and Business counsellor opportunities commencing in January 2020.

The 8-week educational program will provide you with knowledge, skills and resources in:

  • Human Rights, critical anti-oppressive practice and diversity management.
  • Career planning and employment counselling in the Canadian Labour Market
  • Specialized employment readiness training that may include:
    - Individual and Family Support for Visible Minority women entering Canada.
    - Soft skills identification and career development support.
    - Career and employment support in the human services sector, business/entrepreneurship sector, and trades sector.

As a selected Participant, you will ideally bring:

  • A certified Degree or Diploma training in relevant disciplines, i.e. Social Work and Counselling, Human Resources Development, Business and Entrepreneurship or the Trades.
  • At least one year of successful work experience in the Canadian Labour market, coupled with related computer skills.
  • Demonstrated networking skills, strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the latest corporate training techniques.
  • Understanding of project implementation and administration
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Personal flexibility and high motivation.
  • Good budgeting and excellent reporting skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc)

Preference will be given to individuals holding a permanent resident status.
